How long have you been a teacher?

I spent (12) twelve years in the Philippines and I have been teaching for (2) two years in Arizona, USA

What made you get into the teaching profession?

My journey into the teaching profession began with a deep-seated passion for learning and a desire to share that joy with others. Growing up, I was fortunate to have incredible teachers who inspired and encouraged me, and I wanted to be that source of inspiration for others. The moment I saw a student’s eyes light up with understanding, I knew I had found my calling. Teaching allows me to connect with young minds, help them discover their potential, and make a meaningful difference in their lives. It’s a profession that fills my heart with purpose and joy every single day.

Who was your most inspirational teacher & why?

Undeniably, my most inspirational teacher was Mrs. Lopez-Cañete, my 10th-grade homeroom adviser in SAN JOAQUIN KALAWAAN HIGH SCHOOL, PH. She was more than just a teacher to us; she was like a second mother who genuinely cared about every aspect of our lives, especially our success. Her unwavering dedication to our growth was evident in the way she constantly encouraged us to dream bigger and achieve more. Mrs. Lopez-Cañete’s passion for teaching was unparalleled. She never gave up on us, tirelessly working until we fully grasped the lessons. One of the most impactful parts of our daily sessions was the affective component, where she ensured that the lessons resonated with us on a personal level. She skillfully connected the curriculum to real-life situations, helping us see the relevance and importance of what we were learning. Her ability to touch our hearts and minds made a lasting impression on me, and her influence continues to inspire me to this day. Mrs. Lopez-Cañete’s commitment to her students’ holistic development and her relentless pursuit of excellence set a standard that I strive to uphold in my own endeavors.

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges teachers in Arizona face now?

As a teacher in Arizona, I face several significant challenges that impact both my professional and personal life. One of the foremost issues is classroom management. With increasing class sizes and diverse student needs, maintaining an effective and engaging learning environment can be quite demanding. Ensuring that each student receives the attention and support they need requires a great deal of patience, creativity, and resilience. These challenges, while daunting, also serve as a reminder of the importance of the teaching profession. They highlight the need for continued advocacy for better support and resources for educators. Despite these obstacles, the passion for teaching and the desire to make a positive impact on students’ lives remain strong, driving me to persevere and strive for excellence in my role.

How do these issues affect your day-to-day?

These challenges significantly impact my day-to-day life as a teacher in Arizona. Managing a classroom with diverse needs and large class sizes requires constant vigilance and adaptability. It can be exhausting to ensure that every student is engaged and supported, often leaving me feeling stretched thin by the end of the day. Despite these hurdles, my commitment to teaching remains unwavering. Each day, I strive to create a positive and impactful learning environment, driven by the knowledge that my efforts can make a real difference in my students’ lives. These challenges, while difficult, also reinforce the importance of advocating for better support and resources for educators, so we can continue to provide the best education possible.

How are the expectations of becoming a teacher different from reality?

The expectations of becoming a teacher often differ significantly from reality. Being a teacher is more than just delivering a lesson; it involves navigating a diverse array of learning abilities, personalities, community backgrounds, cultures, and generational gaps. This complexity requires a deep understanding of each student’s unique needs and the ability to adapt teaching methods accordingly. The reality of teaching demands a high level of empathy, flexibility, and dedication to foster an inclusive and effective learning environment.

What are some of the most thoughtful & effective ways parents and the community can show gratitude and appreciation?

For me, a simple “thank you” or “gracias” from a parent means a great deal. It acknowledges the hard work and dedication that goes into teaching. Additionally, their cooperation and prompt responses when discussing their child’s progress and success are incredibly valuable. It shows that they are engaged and supportive of their child’s education. Beyond these gestures, active involvement in school activities and volunteering can also be very meaningful. When parents and the community take an active role in the educational process, it creates a supportive environment that benefits everyone. This collective effort not only enhances the learning experience for students but also fosters a strong sense of community and partnership.

What is your wish for your students? Arizona students?

My deepest wish for Arizona’s students is that they are guided by passionate and talented educators who inspire and nurture their potential. I hope they have access to a holistic and comprehensive curriculum that includes diverse activities, fostering both academic and personal growth. Above all, I wish for them to receive a quality education that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in life. This foundation will empower them to pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions to their communities and beyond.

Growing the Tree

Million Dollar Teacher Tree was first developed in a classroom by students in a program called, Next Generation Service Corps at Arizona State University in December of 2017. These students were tasked by Lloyd Hopkins, founder of Million Dollar Teacher project with developing a project that can potentially become an integral part in helping MDTP achieve its mission. The group eventually developed the original prototype for Million Dollar Teacher Tree—a cutout dollar sign that would be placed in surrounding businesses near the partner school. The idea was pitched to staff members of MDTP during the last of their class, and the project was picked up by MDTP as a new pilot program for the organization. After many months of planning, the prototype was eventually revamped into what it is today, Million Dollar Teacher Tree.
